POLITICAL AUTHORITY AND DEMOCRACY IN AFRICA

POLITICAL AUTHORITY AND DEMOCRACY IN AFRICAN CONTEXT1a
BY: PETER QEKO JERE

INTRODUCTION:
In the beginning, God created man in His own image as a social and political animal and gave him dominion and authority over all created beings. Man had political power to rule, to be in control and to be totally in charge. This man however was created to live in mutual relationship with God. After the fall the political authority got transferred to Satan (Isaiah 10:14). Thus Satan became the ruler over all that which God created including man himself. Man who had the dominion became captive under the devil’s control. Thus the power of sin overpowered man. Therefore in this paper, we shall look into the OT political ethics and democracy after the fall. We shall see whether there is some OT political and democratic concepts that can be used to improve the political situation in Africa.

(I). BRIEF AFRICAN POLITICAL AND DEMOCRATIC HISTORY.
For us to understand OT political and Democratic concepts, we need to first look into the account of African politics and democracy. This is important because we cannot understand the current African politics and democratic problems unless we go back and see the whole history in a larger context.. The continent of Africa is going through big western political democratization. This is the liberal democracy, which is based on the western culture as opposed to the African multicultural society. But the African political and democratic changes dates back to the good old days when different kingdom leaders governed the whole African continent. Like in the North and West Africa, there were kingdoms of Egypt, Carthage, Kush Axum, Songhai, Ghana, Mali, and Western Sudan. In the south and central Africa, there were kingdoms like the Mwenemotapa, Zulu, Bemba, Chewa to mention but a few.

During the 14 –17th Century, AD, the continent was bombarded with the intrusion of foreign ideologies as many European went on the voyages of discovery and exploration. Thus people like Vasco Dagama, Bartholomew Diaz and prince Henry the Navigator had a great influence on the whole discovery journey around the continent of Africa. In the Interior, missionary explorers like Dr. David Livingston, Henry Molton Stanley, Richard Burton, John Speke, Richard lender, Robert Moffat, William Murray and Robert Laws, had great influence in the spreading of the new western culture. Of course some came as Christian missionaries who later worked for their home government. Allan Scholefied indicates that some many missionaries went into the interior of Africa and specifically, Richard Burton spent many years in the western African coast (1975:7).

It was this inland exploration and the western influences that led to the partition of Africa in 1885-1888. This partition of Africa was the dividing up of African beautiful land among various European nations. Such nations included Britain, Italy, France, Portugal, Belgium, and Germany. Now in all the various territories the western nations took from Africa, they established their own political administration. Thus we see that the governments in Europe controlled the continent of Africa. For instance, all British colonies were controlled in London while all the French colonies were controlled in Paris. Soon after the partition and colonization of Africa, the continent went through a long period of political struggle and democracy. There was a strong wind of African nationalism. This was the Africans desire to rule themselves. This was the independence struggle from the white colonialists. Of course this period saw all African nation getting their freedoms. We need at this moment in time to know that South Africa was an exceptional because of apartheid. The last step of western democratization was seen from the late eight’s to the middle ninety’s when the western rich nations forced many African nations to have the western form of multiparty democracy if they were to receive economical Aid.

(A). AFRICAN TRADITIONAL DEMOCRACY.
The one thing that people need to know is that we cannot understand African politics unless we go back to the true knowledge of African Traditional Democracy. This African Traditional Democracy is opposed to the Western Traditional Democracy that has been imposed on many African nations. But first, lets us understand the actual meaning of Democracy. According to the Oxford Dictionary, democracy is defined as that form of government in which the sovereign resides in the people as a whole and is exercised by them or by officers elected by them (1994:213). But in the American constitution, democracy is defined as the government of the people, by the people and for the people. In other word, it’s the government where peoples political will and power is respected.

With the above definition of democracy we see that the whole continent of Africa is not a stranger in the history of World democratization. Africa was the first center of Early civilization along the Nile River where democracy was done. Actually the whole Africa had democracy based on African cultures and values. In regard to this, Jafta quoting Pro.William Makgoba says its unreasonable to understand democracy in a western concept only because western democracy is liberal based on one culture and ignores the values of anther cultures. He further say that this western democracy came from people who have one common culture (1998:132). In support of this, Dr. Bingu Wamthalika states that there is clear evidence that Africa have common conceptual and analytical framework of participatory democracy based on African traditional and values (1995:71). Ofcourse Jafta gives eight different kind of democracies as follows: direct democracy, representative democracy, social democracy, participatory democracy, consociated democracy, liberal democracy, people’s democracy and pluralists democracy. According to Wamthalika, Africa had sophisticated democratic organizational structure in the various African Kingdoms. He further says that Historians and Archeologist have unearthed comprehensive and indisputable evidence that ancient African kingdoms had well-structured democracies (1995:75). Such kingdoms included Ghana, Songhai, Mali, Egypt, Kush, Axum, Sudan, Congo and Zimbabwe and had participatory democracy. Quoting from Loyd (Africa in social Change), Wamthalika notes the following: In term of social political organization African kingdoms were ordered by a system through which the king had a council of advisors made up of chiefs who performed administrative functions such as Tax collection, settling down disputes among the people and leading the people to war (1995:75). This was the participatory for m of democratic organization where people had the right to equal opportunities.

(B). ACCOUNTABILITY
In the Old Kingdom days, ordinary men became part and parcel of everyday politics and democratization. People and leaders were accountable to each other. Accountability is the art of being responsible to other and to yourself. Mumthalika says that political democratization and accountability work hand in hand because in democracy he says people are accountable to one another. For instance, leaders to the electorate and the electorate to leaders (1995:73). To facilitate this, African culture and tradition its democratization process promoted dialogue as a channel of information transfer and disseminating. Dr. Wamthalika says that unlike the morden societies where information belongs only to the few rich and powerful men, in traditional and cultural democratization, information was accessible to all and was made available and shared equally amongst the people (1995:73).

( C ). THE FALL OF AFRICAN DEMOCRACY
The once called Dark continent with the once called primitive culture, Africa entered the period of the fall in cultural values as the once existing traditional democracy got disturbed by the western scramble, partition of Africa or the colonization of Africa as other may wish to call it. According to Wamthalika, the Western nations called Africa the Dark Continent with primitive culture because her culture was too advance for a western cultured mind to comprehend it (1995:73). This was evidenced by the great high knowledge and various scientific proofs of the artifacts discovered in the various Old Kingdom sights in Africa. There was high technology in many African kingdoms. Also Africa never depended on western economical donor Aid but had enough and surplus to give out. (Genesis 39-48). In the Colonization of Africa, western nation took control of the once existing African kingdoms. In this case African leaders lost their authority to the white colonial master. It’s with this destruction of the once existing African values that Wamthalika blames the western colonialists for the destruction of African economy, politics culture and democracy (1995:73). The clear proof of absolute African political and economical stability was seen when the whole world depended on Africa for their survival (Gen Chap 38-49). African never depended on Donor Aid but had enough and surplus to give out.

(D). AFRICAN NATIONALISM.
We earlier defined nationalism as the people’s political desire to rule themselves, to move away from the western dominion. This is the people’s political will to rule and control themselves. We need to differentiate between political freedom and economical freedom or political democracy and economical democracy. In the early 1900’s and the early 1960’s the continent of Africa moved through a swift real democratic struggle from the Cape in the south to Cairo in the North.Actually we need to understand that during this time, western colonialist destroyed the whole African economical and democratical life. Now because of the death of African economical and democratically life, African resented the white dominion. We need also to know that during this struggle, it was all about both political and economical nationalism. By definition, political freedom is the people’s desire to politically rule themselves while economical freedom is the people’s desire to rule in terms of being able to control their own economical destiny

This early political struggle, saw Kwame Nkrumah leading Ghana to her political freedom from the British, Kenneth Kaunda leading Zambia to political freedom in 964, Dr. Julius Nyerere leading Tanzania to freedom in 1963, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta leading Kenya to freedom in 1963, Marshal Samora Mashelu leading Mozambique to freedom in 1975 and Dr. Kamuzu Banda leading Malawi to political freedom in 1964 to mention but a few. It’s interesting that though African nations got political independent, they failed to attain their economical independence. Since economy plays a greater role in any democracy, African attained freedom didn’t survive because it had no strong economical foundation. They continued to rely on the western colonialist for economical sustenance.

( II) OLD TESTAMENT LAND ETHIC IN RELATION TO AFRICAN POLITICS AND DEMOCRACY.
The Land identified the nation of Israel. Ofcourse the OT and New Testament Biblical history is about the Promised Land. In Genesis Chapter 12, God Called Abraham and promised him this unknown piece of land which his descendants later inherited during the days of Joshua. The Story of Joshua is about land distribution in Canaan, the Abrahamic Promised Land. Through out the OT, God is in the process of building up the nation of Israel. A nation can’t be formed without a piece of land hence God had to give Abraham a specific piece of land. It’s on this piece of land that God was to build up a nation of Israel. Therefore land is vital, as is the backbone of any nation. But when we look into Israeli’s history we see that the land belonged to God and the people were the stewards, keeper of the land. The people were responsible to God for the better management of the land. They were the caretakers. Wright says that the relationship between the Israelites and God was sealed in the land (1992:50). Wright further says that the land was a divine gift from God, which functioned as proof of real relationship between God and the people, and it was their inheritance (1992:53). In other words, no land no Israel. As God gave them Land the Israelite, were accountable before God as regard the usage of the land.

(A). AFRICAN LAND ETHIC
Just like the OT Land issue, in Africa land plays a greater role in every aspect of people’s economical, social and political lives. The land of Africa is the people of Africa. Everything in Africa is about land because land is the backbone of the social, political and economical life of the people. Quoting Unthuli, Jafta states that to deprive Africans of their land is like depriving them of their soul (1998:141). This explains that land was God given gift entity and if it was not for the land of Africa, Africa could not have existed. If, people fight over African land they fight over the African people. This is because we cannot separate the two; the people of Africa from the land of Africa because the two are the same, are identical and are tightly attached together.

(B). IDENTITY.
Land is the number one identity of the African People. For instance, there's the land of Malawi, the land of Mozambique and the land of Kenya to mention but a few. Thus people of Africa are indetified by the land and not color. Of course it’s interesting that peoples of different colors are in Africa and they are not identified by their color but by the land of Africa. When the white colonialist came into Africa and partitioned the whole of it among themselves, they did that because they wanted land. This process was about Land and not the people. But the white colonialist didn’t know the African land ethic that people and land are identical. Thus we see that in all the history of traditional Africa, the partition of Africa was such a horrible thing ever because it divided the cultures and traditions of the African people. People were interested in land because this land had rich minerals like gold, silver, zinc copper to mention but a few. Thus Zimbabwean President as he was addressing the United Nation Land Issue on Zimbabwe, said that land is Zimbabwe and the people of Zimbabwe cannot do without their land, their forefathers’ inheritance. He said that the people of Zimbabwe would die clinging to their land (August 2000). But Thabo Mbeki the current South African President associates himself with the land, valleys, mountains, rivers and peoples of Africa (1998:31). Thus we see that even in economical and political crises, African love to identify themselves with their beloved land.

(C). OLD TESTAMENT LAND RIGHTS
As regard the land right ethics, Birch says that in contrast to the hierarchically constructed political system of the surrounding ancient world, Israel constructed a solid system that was to considerable extent, (grass roots up rather than top down). This he says that was due and valuable to every member of the community even the weakest or the poorest that removed class identification (1991:178). In this system, every member of the Israelite community had the right to land ownership. But we need also to know that slaves and aliens had no birth right over this land overship scheme in Israel. As regard the democratic extension of political and social right of the people, Birch says that in Israel, politics dealt with the manner in which communities got organized to make decision s and to utilize (distribute) power (1991:178). Quoting from Gottwald, Birch indicates the following about the social political ethics surrounding the Israelites:

The social economic relationship in Israel were egalitarian in the sense that the entire population was assured of approximately equal access to resources by means of their organization into extended families protective association of families (sometimes called clans.) and tribes, federated as an intertribal community called Israel. These groups operated in various autonomous or combined ways to provide mutual aid, external defense and a religious ideology of covenanted or treaty-linked equal. He says that the defining features of politics in Old Israel was that political functions were diffused throughout the social structure or focused in temporary ad hoc role assignment (1991:178)

This explains that that there was democracy based on the Israelites culture. We therefore need to agree that the political setting of the Israelites nation had democratic principles based on their culture. But adding on egalitarianism that Birch talks about, Mumthalika says that this is the absolute belief in equality in term of political, economical and social development of nations. This is the unleashing of combined growth and productive forces of the people toward sustained growth and development. It means again the fulfillment of political social and economic emancipation (1995:91).

(III). OLD TESTAMENT LEADERSHIP ETHIC IN RELATION
TO AFRICAN POLITICS AND DEMOCRACY.

When we look into the OT leadership ethic, its vital to understand the plan of God after the fall of man. After the fall, man was unable to do anything t achieves the required status that God gave him in the Garden of Eden. Thus now we have God entering in the covenant of grace relationship with man. Palmer Robertson (The Christ of the Covenant) says that since man became incapable of works suitable for meriting salvation, God entered into the covenant of grace with man (1980:55). This was the step God took to bring man back by His won unmerited favor. According to Robertson, God redemptive plan started soon after the fall of man the unfolding process passed through; Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, David and Solomon to mention but a few (1980:62). We have God fully involved in the salvation process of man.

(A). DIRECT RULE OF GOD (THEO CENTRIC RULE)
The leadership ethics of the nation of Israel is divided into two major groups, direct and indirect rule of God. Firstly in the direct rule God Himself controlled the nation of Israel. This was the continued works of grace upon the fallen man because he could not save himself but also he could not lead himself well. To redeem this crisis, God was directly involved in the everyday life of the fallen himself. This was the fully manifestation of His grace. But there are some few things we need to know about the direct rule of God in this context.

(i) Charismatic Leaders
The First part of the OT leadership ethic is characterized by the presence of Charismatic leaders. These were the people who stayed, lived, ate and spoke with God. These were the people through whom God established His rule on earth. These were the tools that God directly used to govern His people Israel. Such leaders included; Abraham, Moses, Joshua, Gideon, Deborah, Jephtah, Samson and Samuel. Briefly, Abraham was the first person called from his how town of Ur to go to this unknown Promised Land. He believed God and Trusted Him. Moses was the Great Liberator whom God used to redeem the Israelites from Captivity in Egypt. He is the one who received the Mosaic Law for the people of God. Joshua was the one who led the whole military conquest of the Promised Land. Deborah was the first woman warrior and she led the Israelites to war against the Canaanites. Gideon was the one who led the Israelites to war against the Midianites. Jephtah was the one who led the Israelites to war against the Ammonites while Samson was the one who led the Israelites against the Philistines. This was the centralized administration under the leadership of God but through the leader who had direct communication with God Himself. The history of all theses charismatic leaders of Israel creates the strong foundation of the History of Israel because never was their a time when God could physically dwell in the midst of his people than during the days of the said charismatic leaders. This is one the most important part of the ancient history of Israel.

(ii) Liberation
During the days of Moses as the great prophet and the treat charismatic leader of Israel the lord did many mighty works that people comprehended (Birch 1991:128). This Exodus according to Birch was the representative of constant process of claiming and reclaiming the lost glory. But its important to know that in the plan of God, the nation of Israel was formed first and foremost by response to the deliverance the people had experienced (Birch 1991:124). Moses as leader of the liberation works of God was the agent through whom God moved. Its vital to note that Birch Says that in the Exodus Gods power didn’t operate in isolation from human agent and the role of God’s agent in liberation (Moses) was often to stand between the rebellious people and God. (1991:127). Actually this demanded obedience and faithfulness from the people

(iii). Moses the Political Activists
When we look deeper into the Moses's political activities, we see that he challenged and destroyed both the religion and political life of the Ancient Egypt and showed them that the Israel’s God was the only powerful living God. Walter Brueggeman says that Moses declared Yahweh the sovereign one that acts in his Lordly freedom and is no captive to any social perception and acts towards His own plan and purpose. This Moses he further says dismantled the pharaohic politics of oppression and exploitation by encountering it with the politics of justice and compassionate (1978:17)

(B) THE INDIRECT RULE OF GOD.
While the Israelites enjoyed the direct rule of God, the people later cried to Samuel for a king (I Sam. 8-9). The Israelites admired the structural leadership of anther nations around them who had their Kings leading them in battles. They wanted a physical leader not the unseen God, someone whom them could not see leading them in battles. They wanted a physical King. With this, we see the change in structural leadership of the nation of Israel. God allows them to have their physical king. At this time, God grace prevails as indirectly rules His people through this physical king and the prophets. Lets look at some things in the indirect rule of God in Israel.

(i). National Politics and Democracy
When the people of Israel asked for a king and God gave them Saul as their first ruler, this created the indirect political rule of God. But we see the two levels of political approach, the national and the local politics. In this national politics, Douglas Knights says that political and authority was seated in the hand of a small group of people, These were the king royal family and the royal court, high civil and military official, large land owners wealthy merchant, pries leaders. Fulfilling the prophetic voice of Samuel, Douglas Knight further say that this small powerful group of people controlled the economic well being as well as the legal and political viability of the rest of the country (1995:93). To understand this better lets look at the four political and democratic rights as follows:

(ii). Self-determination and participation
Self-determination is the prerogative and power to choose or affirm one type of political system to participate whether directly or indirectly in the on going administration of government including the enforcing of laws. This is also the exercise of political and democratic right of the people (Douglas 1978:97). Douglas further says that the mornachy became status quo and the only remaining question was succession (1978:101). But when we look into the whole morden history of Israel we have period of the violation of democratic principles mainly during the day of the division of the kingdom.

(iii). Political Power (Citizenship)
As regard citizenship and political participatory in democratic issues, Douglas urges that if by citizen ship is meant the power and right to participate fully in the political process of the state, them he says there were few members Israelis national political community (1978:102). This was in the hands of the few the high-ranking people. It need to be understood that every Israel was subject to the domino of the government but the number who had a power to any decision making process was a few percent of the royal family and the rich military and civil officials. Douglas further says that to call the Israelite political structure participatory monarch as opposed to despotic monarch may be valid so long as it is understood that those participating with the king were not the people at large nor even the landed free males but members of small upper class close to the king. 1978:102).

(iv). Protection of Citizen Rights
In many occasion people’s political rights and freedoms were not respected. The king and the upper class people, who had that political power to rule and govern, were what I could call Immune to any legal action against them. We could also say that these groups of people were above the law. Small ruling class violated Many times the people’s Universal human rights, also called natural law or rights and traditional rights. This was because this elite class of people constructed power for themselves and became legally immuned to any litigation. We see this for instance in the life of King David. He took the wife of Uriah who he himself ordered to be killed. Again the Ahab’s plan to take Naboth’s land explains the fact that common men had no legal protection from those in high offices. Now we see that God had Prophets raised up so that them be mouthpiece in rebuking such actions.

(IV). THE OLD TESTAMENT PROPHETIC ETHICS.
The prophetic ethics according to Birch cannot be understood apart from the social contexts in which the prophetic words were originally heard (1991:241). The prophetic office is the calling and the prophets proclaim God s word to redeem the people from the social injustices. For instance, the following were called Amos; Isaiah; Jeremiah; Ezekiel and Zacheria to mention but a few. God put prophetic word on the lips and heart and they proclaimed it (Birch 1991:254). In this whole prophetic work, the focus is the word that God wants it proclaimed. It is important to note as Birch says that the prophets were observers of the world around them. Thus the observed politics of their nation, the practices of their leaders, the structures of economy and the welfare of the most vulnerable. He also says that the prophets spoke to Israel as a community, as a social reality and as a collection of individuals and finally the prophets were acutely concern for historical reality and proclaimed the prophetic word to Israel as a people who had known God in history of their own salvation experience (1991:258).

PROPHETIC VOICE IN MODERN AFRICAN POLITICS
Politics and democracy looks dark and with no hope is there is no prophetic voice. In the Old Testament as we have seen, many ordinary people suffered and were mistreated by the High positioned men because their was no prophetic voice. In our time, the main line, the liberals and the conservative disagree on the prophetic concept. The liberals believe that prophetic voice has something to do with the immediate situation while the conservative believe that prophecy has something to do with the future (Brueggeman 1978:12). Now if the church is divided how can the prophetic voice work unitedly? For the past 30 years, there has been lack of prophetic voice. Soon after independent in the late 50’s and the early 60’s, African leaders created autocratic regimes and silenced all those who came up with new way of political thinking. There was lack of prophetic voice and due to this, those in higher places became richer in the expense of the ordinary poor people. He richer got richer and the poor got poorer. Actually this has affected even the present Africa because there is blood being shade all across the continent because some few individuals are power hungry. Its in this view that the current South African President, Thabo Mbeki shares his pains to all the conflicts, violence and deaths that took place in Rwanda, Burundi, Somalia, Sudan, Liberia, Angola, Sierra Leone and Ethiopia to mention but a few (1998:35). But speaking to participants in London on the Angola Matters Issue, Teresa Santana called upon Angolan Leaders to stop the war because it was not a solution to Angola's political and economical destiny (1994:113). Unlike in Angola, there was no prophetic voice in Rwanda because Adams says that the killings of people was everywhere houses, churches, hospitals etc,(1994:37).

(V). OT POLITICAL ETHICS IN RELATION TO GOOD GOVERNANCE IN AFRICA.
When we look into this the question is, is there any OT Political Ethics that we can use to help in good governance in Africa? To answer this, we need to know that African countries have the indirect rule of God as it occurred during the days of King Soul and the rest of the OT Kings. We have put in place political leader who govern us. These leaders like the OT leaders are greedy and corrupt sometimes and have no regard for the constitution, they are there to manipulate and change it to suit the situation they are in.

But in answering the question of the Old Testament political ethic relevant for the present African political and democratic situation, their is nothing much. Actually there is nothing much admirable the Old Testament Leaders did in their own culture of course that African could use. I am forced to say this because the OT leaders and their people in many occasions disobeyed God and went their own way. Their leaders shade a great deal of innocent blood as they killed innocent people to tightened up their political ambitions. Some of them were involved in Military Coup detat mainly in the northern kingdom. Like the Africans the Israelites accommodated foreign way of life, which was not pleasing before God and them ended up worshipping foreign gods. African countries have accepted the western way of democracy as opposed to the African way of democracy that promotes culture, peace, joy and African one love. We need to know that the OT people had their own culture and disobeyed God in their own culture and it would be dangerous to apply some principles that were used by the Jews in their walk with God because though these principles may look good, they may not be applicable in African context in one way or the other.

CONCLUSION
Out of all what we have studied the only thing that we need in Africa is the prophetic voice. Africa needs a big prophetic voice than ever before. Of course some may urge that Christian church leaders are all over Africa and that we need no such a voice. But we need to know that because of sin, leaders have abandoned their calling and accommodated the spirit of compromise to the needs of political leaders. Due to this all forms of wickedness have crept into the church. It’s in this view that Carlsen says that God has given the church leaders responsibility to take the lead in denouncing corruption and misrule (2000:2). Christians have the authority because Christ is not only the head of the church but also he is the ruler of kings of the earth (Rev.1: 5) and all kings and political leaders need to be civic educated that they are to fear God and observe all the laws of God (Deut.17: 18,19). Also it’s the duty of the Christian leaders to educate those in authority that all people and nations will be answerable to God’s Holy standard as it occurred in the OT time (Sodom and Gomorrah Destruction, Genesis 13:13; Nineveh (Jona1: 2). Above all God created everything that exists in the world including any political authority (Psalms 24:1). Its only if the prophetic voice will be available that Africa will be healed from the wounds of corruptions and any forms of sinful act in the churches and political offices. It’s only the prophetic voice that is able to rebuke and condemn any sinful act. The prophetic voice has the power from God unlike the religious voice, which is a lifeless voice from a spiritually dead church organization. We don’t have to fully use the Jewish tradition and cultures in sorting African politics and democracy because God dealt with the Jews in their own culture because God is able to sort out our political and democratic problems in our own culture and setting. African culture is not inferior to any culture in the world and God need no any peoples culture to sort out other people’s problems. No any culture is a standard measure for another culture. Once again the only thing that Africa need is the prophetic voice because it is the only tool that can solve specific political problems in Africa.

TREASURES ON EARTH

NEW TESTAMENT HEMENUTICS
SERMON ON THE MOUNT: TREASURES ON EARTH
MATTHEW CHAPTER 6:19-24
PETER QEKO JERE: BA, B.A (Th) HON. M.T h

THE TREASURES.

MATTHEW 6:19-24

19 Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.22 The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good your whole body will be full of light. 23 but if your eyes are bad your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness.24 No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money. NIV.

INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND.
One of the major activities in the ministry of our Lord Jesus Christ was teaching. On several occasions he taught and equipped his disciples for future ministry. From the very beginning of the Sermon on the Mount (chapter 5), Jesus taught and imparted tremendous knowledge to the lives of his disciples. This was like a camp-meeting on the mountain where Christ as the Course-Director taught several series of topics as follows; The Beatitudes 5:1-12; Salt and the Light 5:13-16; The Christian Law 5:17-20; Murder 5:15-26; Adultery 5:27-30; Divorce 5:31-32; Vengeance 5:33-37;Love 5:43-47; Giving 6:1-4; Prayer 6:5-14; Fasting 6:16-18; Treasures 6:19-24;Worry 6:25-34; Judgment 7:1-6; Seeking 7:7-12; Narrow Path 7:13-14; Tree and Fruit 7:15-23 finally the Wise and the Fool Builders 7:24-29.In this paper therefore, we shall basically look into one of the courses Christ taught his disciples. This was about The Treasures (6:19-24). We shall look into the position of Christ as regard the storage of our treasures and the consequences that follow. We shall again look into the concept of the treasures and heart and why they are inseparable. Finally, we shall look into the function of the eye and the impossibility of man to work for two masters.

THE TREASURES ON THE EARTH verse 19
Do not store up for yourselves treasures on the earth…verse 19 NIV or Lay not up…KJV. This was Christ speaking. In another way round, Christ meant, don't dare keep your treasures on earth. Soon after Christ finished teaching his disciples on the topic of fasting, he cautioned them by teaching them on how best to bank their treasures. He commanded them, " Do not store your treasures on earth” which means, don't dare keep your treasures on earth. By way of background, the disciples abandoned everything that they had and followed Christ. This was a way of comforting and giving them new hope.
Different scholars define “treasures” differently. John Trapp defines treasures as earthly goods that are in abundance and are garbage of the earth (1868:103). But in support of this, Alexander Maclaren indicates that treasures are anything that determines destiny of the heart of man. These are material possessions like money, food and clothing (P.302). These are materials that control the heart focus of man. But treasures in Jesus’s day were perishable and valuable goods (Carson 1994:43).

PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH EARTHLY TREASURES
(a). MOTH AND RUST. Verse 19.
"…Where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break and steal”(v. 19).
Its amazing that in this text, Jesus Christ points out the three major problems with the earth’s banking system. The three problems were: moth, rust and thieves. But according to John Matthew, moth is defined as an insect which lay eggs in the most costly dresses or cloth stored up, while rust is a red or orange like coating which forms on the surface of any metal after expiry period is over (1945:43). Also moth is a small nocturnal lepidopterous insect of the genus Tinea which breeds in cloths or its something that eats away (Oxford Dict. 1286). This is eye disease that affects the eye focus. How problematic are these (moth and rust)? The main problem was that the two have and had the potential to kill and destroy the treasures kept. Christ told them not to use the earth as a bank because there was no future and hope but destruction. It is also clear that earthly possessions lose value by rusting, wearing out rotting away and getting out of date (Sykes. M 1989:38). However, Clark points out that one can bank all treasures on the earth depending on the following condition: that the focus of the heart should not be there (treasures) but on orphans widows and many unfortunate people (1989:93). But what Sykes says is practically impossible because in the passage we will later see that the heart follows where the treasures are. Actually, Jesus didn't hate the earth or have any problems with it apart from the fact that it was poor ground for storing treasures

(b). THEFT AND DESTRUCTION. Verse 19
…Where thieves break in and steal…V.19".
The other problem Christ mentioned was theft. We saw that moth and rust kills and destroys but now Christ says that thieves break in and steal all stored treasures. Thieves have the ability to break through and steal all the goods. This creates no hope on earth because there is destruction, death, theft and corruption. According to the ‘Devil’s Manifesto,” he comes to steal, kill and to destroy (John 10:10). Of course like the moth, rust and thieves, The Devil steals the joy, peace and love of the things of God. The devil also steals the desire, patience, and interest from Gods Children. The devil will also destroy and kill any existing hope in God’s Children. This explains that the devil is at war with children of the Kingdom and not those who are in the kingdom of darkness.

THE TREASURES IN HEAVEN V20a
But store up for yourselves treasures in Heaven where moth and rust do not destroy and where thieves do not break and steal. Verse 20
Verse 20 starts with a preposition, " But" NIV, which explains the point of contrast with the previous thought in verse 19. Unlike the earth, Jesus in verse 20 tells his disciples of a better place to bank their treasures. This place is heaven. Heaven is a unique place full of the glory of God. This is a place where non-perishable and perishable goods are never destroyed. Clarks says that the only way to render goods eternal is to transmit them to heaven by act of charity (1831:94). This act of charity is the art of helping the unfortunate ones with the little that is available. There were of course reasons why Christ supported heaven as a better place to keep treasures. Firstly, it was a safe place; " where moth and rust do no destroy" NIV. It was a place where treasures were exempted from decay. Finally, in heaven treasures were safe in the hands of God who could be trusted. In heaven treasures are undefiled and do not fade away (Alexander P. 302). In this case no one could go, break and steal. Christ was concern with the banking of treasures because he was looking into the future. He wanted them to focus on the things of God by banking in heaven. Bakers says that treasure to be banked in heaven include works of righteousness, suffering for Christ and forgiving others (1924:33). As far as John Matthew is concern, he says that we serve God when we bank our treasures in heaven (1945:38). But there are two things that we see now in this text. Decision making and service in the kingdom. Everything discussed is about deciding to bank treasures on earth or heaven. Whether one hates it or not, he has to decide between the two though Christ told them in form of a command. " Do not store up treasures on earth" or don't dare use the earth but use heaven as a storage place. As regard the service in the kingdom, we see that Christ showed mercy to his disciples because he told them on how to prosper even in the life to come.
It should be noted that this action of banking treasures is not a way of asking favours from God because no one can purchase salvation or any position in the kingdom of God.

TREASURES AND HEART…. VERSE 21.
For where your treasures lies your heart will be there also…verse 21.
Having dealt with heaven as the only best banking place, Christ in verse 21 continues to defend his position. He says, " For where your treasures lie your heart will be also (verse 21"). His main concern was the destiny of the heart, which in this case was controlled by the treasure. Thus he told them to bank in heaven, which meant that their hearts (disciples) would be in heaven too. This explains that the two (treasures and heart) are inseparable though treasures are such a powerful tool. Calvin says that the earth’s happiness is but for a short time (1979:333). There are people in a modern day world whose focus is the earthly satisfaction because they bank their resources on earth. Such people's happiness is laid up near hell and Satan than God (2 Pet 2:12-13). Such are people who have all the physical material riches but have got no hope. In all this its Christ desire that people should focus all their treasures in heaven and their heart will follow too. Now with this, Christ will be the people's main area of focus as they bank in heaven and focus on the things of God.

THE EYE VERSE 22
The eye is the lamp of the body. Verse 22
Just as Christ used metaphors in the former sections of his teaching, he is doing the same things in this second phase; he metaphorically uses the physiological human body part, the eye and its delicate function in the whole anatomical system. Though the eye is small, it but plays a tremendous role in every day activities of the whole anatomy system. The eye is to the body as the sun is to the whole universe in daytime or the lamp or candle in the night. (Clark 1831:94). Nor can the feet belly and the whole body direct you but the eye alone. The eye alone is enough to direct the body whether big or small (Calvin 1979:339). Thus without the body eye, the human body has problems of survival and stays for a short time and more care of it is needed. Theodore points out that the eye must be properly focused all the time. No man can really see more that one thing at time and the failure of the eye to see one thing means at least some defect of sight like astigmatism. The eye, which is selfish, cannot be properly focused (1928:55). The eye is described as the lamp or light of the whole anatomy system and its main purpose is to shine and give light to the whole body system. This means that without the eye man would not perform the required activities properly. We need to be reminded that the lamp needs oil to shine, just like the eye, which needs food (energy). Thus in the kingdom, we need Christ to shine in our lives with the power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus is the light and he who has Christ has the shinning light that will guide and lead him in the Christian walk.

THE EFFECTS OF BAD AND GOOD EYE VERSE 22&23
If your eyes are good your whole body will be full of light but if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. (Verse 22 –23).

Before we look into this verse in detail, it's important to see how other versions narrate it. The verse is explained as follows from different other versions of the Bible.KJV uses the words “single eye” and “ evil eye”, Moffat Bible Commentary, uses the words “ generous eye” and “selfish eye” while the NIV uses the word “good and bad eye”. In this verse, Christ is introducing area of contrast between, good eye and bad eye. The eye has to be either good or bad. The good eye is that one which is single or generous and produces full light “V. 22a”. This is the eye, which represents the good things (Carson 1994:84). This is the eye, which has banked treasures in heaven and the whole heart is in heaven. This is the eye with undivided focus and purpose and produces full light. A bad eye is that one which has something to do with bad things. This represents a man who bank treasures on earth and his whole heart is focused on the world not God. This is the eye with many areas of focus; as a result it fails to produce light. This is a hypocritical eye, which looks for the applause of men (Carson 1994:86). But there is a horrible darkness that Christ explains which comes from the hypocritical life of those who think they are great in the kingdom. Such are people who show off to be more spiritual but inside them is horrible darkness. It’s interesting that this is what has become of the present day church.

THE IMPOSSIBLE (TWO MASTERS) V. 24.
No man can sever two masters, either he will hate the one and love the other (24)
In this verse, Christ is introducing the concept of servant hood in the kingdom of God (serving one master). He says it's practically impossible to be dedicated to two masters. He is actually exposing the hypocrisy of those who work for God and for Satan at the same time. These were the Pharisees and Scribes who wanted recognition and applause from men. It’s important to know that the Jews believed in monotheism (serving one true God). This was their proverb that no man can save two masters, much less two gods, for their commandments will contradict or cross (Matthew H.1996: 65). In this case serving two masters contradicted the concept of single eye, good eye and generous eye where all the focus is directed to the one only God (verse 22&23). This explains the commitment and dedication, love interest and desire to serve one God alone. John Stott says that while men can work for two employers, no slave can be a property of two masters (1995:158)

…For either one will hate the one and love the other. Verse 24. Now Christ talks of the results of serving two masters in the kingdom. These are love and hate. The two are never together because the kingdom of God is about love. Thus, in the kingdom we are encouraged to love God, our neighbour and our enemies. But God want to share His glory with nobody else because He is a jealous God (II King 2, Isaiah 42:8). He always wants people to love Him and Him alone. Throughout the OT biblical history, the Israelites went through wars and disasters because of idolatry.

SERVE GOD OR MAMMON (MONEY). VERSE 24
You can not serve God or Money … Verse 24
Christ now winds up his teaching on the subject of treasures by emphasising that one cannot serve both God and Mammon (money) together. Mammon, according to Carson, is something in which someone puts all his confidence (1994:88). This is something that occupies the mind and whole heart of man. But according to Matthew Henry, mammon is Assyrian word that signifies gain (1996:66). With this definition, everything we value or put more confidence in is mammon and includes riches, price, job, children and many more. The problem is not with the materials one has, but the area of focus. This is where the heart is, according to the theory of the heart and treasures. Many Christians are lovers of money, which is the root of all evil (1 Tim. 6:10). Their focus has changed from God to the pleasures of the world because they have many areas of focus and are in horrible darkness. These are people who idolise money, which works contrary to the basic needs in the kingdom of God

CONCLUSION.
In conclusion, there are three observations that have been made. Firstly, the text under study talks about the decision-making process in the kingdom of God. This has been explained throughout the text. In this case, it's important for Christians to make profitable decisions that will produce fruits in their walk with Christ. Secondly we also observed that there are results out of every decision taken, be it good or bad. Bad decision will produce negative results, while good decisions will produce positive results. Thus, we thank God that Christians can be partakers in the making of decision though the results of our decisions will follow us. Its exciting that this text is a powerful tool and guide to all Christians in their daily walk with the Lord, as they make several decisions pertaining to the kingdom of God. Finally we observed that the treasures could be anything that controls your heart. This means that it is not necessarily money as others may say. This is anything that takes all your heart focus.

SERMON ON THE MOUNT: THE DANGER OF BEING JUDGEMENTAL
MATTHEW CHAPTER 7:1-6.
PETER QEKO JERE: BA, B.A (Th) HON. M.T h

(I). INTRODUCTION.

Chapter 7 of the book of Matthew continues and concludes Jesus’ sermon on the mountain. Actually the focus in this chapter is on our right relationship toward God and man. It’s important for children in the kingdom of God to have that right relationship with God and fellow men. But Christ commands children in the kingdom to demonstrate love on fellow kingdom mate before the love is extended to God the Kingdom Master. In this chapter we have a number of key issues that Christ is addressing. He addresses the consequences of being judgmental (attitude) (verse 1-6), prayer (V7-13), dangers of false prophets (v 15-20), obedience (21-27) and the effects of the sermon in people’s lives (28-29)
(Matthew Henry 1996:70).

In the context understudy (7:1-6), we have some few very important issues that Jesus Christ is addressing as follows; believer’s judgemental attitude (v 1-2), hypocrisy (v 3-5) and the dogs and swine issue (v6). In this study, we shall see the true biblical interpretation of the word judgement as used in this context. We shall see whether we have the liberty to judge or not. We shall again look into what the text mean when it address word like (mote v. 3); beam (v3) and hypocrisy (5). We shall look into the true biblical interpretation of Verse 6 (Dogs and Swine, Pearl, Sacred things). We shall finally see how this area of study can be applied to our modern day Christian life

(II). THE CONTEXTUAL MEANING OF “JUDGE NOT”, verse 1-2.

“Judge not”, V 1a

Many people tend to misunderstand this verse and have misused it. This has led to people compromising and leaving those in sin unrebuked. This has been a cover up as many people have literally used the verse to escape spiritual reconstruction and rebuilding process. In this context, many scholars understand the word “judge not,” differently.According to Samuel Clark, this phrase, “judge not” is one of the most important and excellent exhortation in the whole of the sermon on the mountain. He says that this phase is against rash, harsh uncharitable judgement and thing of Evil (1831:98). But Charles Elliot says that this “judge not” was applicable to the Jews who judged the gentiles as inferior people before them and before God (40). George Buttrick says that we cannot help it but to always judge because life is about judgement be it Christian or no Christian, politician or non-politician and national or international. He further says that not all judgement is bad but censorious and condemnation (1939:234). John Stott on the same issue, says that this phrase “judge not” is not against the magistrates or judges because according to Roman 13, their offices are ordained by God Himself. He says that we all judge others and to fail to judge will be to be hypocritical to our own nature because God create us to make value-judgement (1995:175).

He further says that in the whole sermon on the mount, Jesus Christ was promoting the critical power, to have our righteousness exceed that of the Pharisee and he urges that we cannot obey the sermon teaching unless we all evaluate and develop critical mind on the issues and see that our position is better, higher than others (1995:175)(a).. But Carson interpretation of this verse is more clear and he says that the word judge not means to discern, to judge judicially, to be judgemental, to condemn (judicially and otherwise). He further states that the word in the context means not to be judgemental and not to have critical mind with condemning attitude (1994:108). Thus Carson’s view agrees with Loud Jones who says that no one is not excused to judge (1962:175).

With this we see that the phrase judge not literally does not put a stop to the judicial process but it discourages the spirit of being judgemental with bad attitudes. This is the spirit that doesn’t build but destroys. Both The motive and attitude is bad and negative1. Since the whole process of being judgemental is based on the attitude we need to know that this attitude has to be positive. As the context is against the judgemental spirit full of negative attitude, we now understand why several biblical texts encourages Christians to always judge positively even as we are told to judge or discern spirit operation2

(III). WHY CHRISTIAN SHOULD NOT JUDGE.

“Judge not that ye be not judged. For with what judgement ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.kjv
In these verses (1-2), we have the two main reasons why Christians are not encouraged to judge. We should bear in mind that by “to judge” we mean the judgemental negative attitude that is there to destroy and kill as earlier said. The two main reasons that Christ gave were as follows:
(a). That we may not be judged
(b). Because the same measure we use on others, others will use when judging us. But for us to understand this lets see the main reasons in detail as follows:
(a). That ye be not judged (Verse 1b) KJV

The lord Jesus Christ told the disciple on the mountain not to judge so that they too may not be judged. This was the heart of mercy, as Jesus didn’t want his disciples to fall into this ditch of being judged by others. We need to understand that Christ didn’t want his disciples to be judgemental, critical and negative towards others. Thus Christ said, judge not that you be not judged or could be judge not so that others may not judge you. Joseph Parker say that we do more that merely words when we pass judgement on fellow men because when we judge we sour seeds that will one day reap in form of fruits (P.235). This too reminds us of the golden rule that says that do to others what you may want others do to you (Mt 7:12).

Thus if we judge others, they will one day judge us and to avoid this we have to do to others what we want others to do to us3. Charles Elliot says that we should not judge without remembering our sins, that we judge only the offence and not the offender and judge no man unless its our duty to do so (40). This explains that God hate sin and not a person because even Christ came to destroy the power of sin. So in the whole explanation of Verse 1b, we see that the meaning behind Jesus statement was not the literal interpretation of “Judge not” meaning that we should not say anything or build in a form of criticizing, but he meant to tell his disciples not to have judgmental mind or negative attitude to condemn.

(b). Same Measure (Verse 1b)

What measure ye mete it shall be measured to you again 1b

Here we have the second factor that explains why Jesus discouraged people in the kingdom to be judgmental. He says that with what judgment we judge, we shall be judged and also with what measure we use, it shall be used on us (Verse 2). This factor explains the consequences that will follow the judgmental attitude on others. Jesus says that the same measure you use on others will return and be used on us, should we be involved in judging others4. Thus we have the same measure concept. George Buttricks says that life gives back what we pour into it (if we pour poison in life, life will produce poison and if we pour good in life, life will produce good)(1939:324). He furthers say that revenge breeds’ revenge, condemnation produce condemnation and censors bring censors and love produces love (1939:324)5.

So we see the rule of retaliation and equal proportion in the dealing of God in His just judgement6. But the one outstanding issue is the judgmental attitude. By now we should know that we are dealing with judgmental attitude (negative) toward others. We should know that we are to judge only on the condition that our attitudes are positive and should be aimed at building up and bringing the soul to the kingdom of God and not the negative critical condemnatory mind that has the passion to destroy and kill. Carson says that the meaning of the whole of this verse promotes the abolishment of judgmental attitude because if we are judgmental towards others, others too will be judgmental towards us7.

Therefore Christians are encouraged to exercise positive judgment, full of the heart to build up and love to those who are going astray 8 In additional, Kingdom Children are encouraged to forgive others if they want God to forgive them (Matthew 6:14-16). This forgiveness is based on the golden rule concept, which shows the relationship and oneness in flow of the whole sermon of the mountain9.

(IV). HYPOCRISY ( VERSE 3-4)

Verses 3-4 of Chapter 7 explain the activities that take place in the kingdom of God. It shows what children in the kingdom many times do. These activities demonstrate the negative attitude that children of God in the kingdom have on others. This was hypocrisy. Jesus Christ in this context rebuked this negative attitude (judgemental mind)10.

Thus Jesus said why do you look at the speck (NIV) or mote (kjv) in your brother’s eyes and pay no attention to the plank (NIV) or beam (KJV) in your own eyes (Verse 3-4). This is one of the most important are where Christians tend to fall. This is because the whole process has something to do with the attitude. Hypocrisy is the attitude problem when one pretends to be what he is not. Christians pinpoint others sins as if they themselves are sinless. Many are the times again when Christians concentrate in pointing out wickedness in other people’s lives while they themselves are victim of the same sins11.According to Frederick mote is a small piece of straw or splinter of wood while the beam is a large plank (1929:967). As regard the beam, Frederick says that this can be conspicuous moral faults or even small moral faults that make it hard for Christians to arrive at the true knowledge of others (1929:967).

Now if the mote mean small splinter in ones life and the beams means small or big moral faults then we are able to see the hypocritical mind of people as they spend more time sorting out problems in other people’s lives while they themselves are in darkness. Thus Christianity in the modern Age is full of Hypocrisy because people tend to show what they are not inside their hearts and that’s why Christ said, “the people praised him with the voice and not with their hearts. All in all we see the marvellous connection and relationship in all the verses Matthew 7:1-4 that in verses 1-2, Christ discouraged the judgemental attitude and the critical mind and tells the disciples about the consequences of being judgemental while in verses 3-4, Christ reveals that in the course of being judgemental, the probability of one to be hypocrical is very high because the focus is on others sinful life.

(V). CHRISTIAN MUST BE A BROTHER (VERSE 5)

…Cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shall thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of they brother’s eye. Kjv

While in Verses 3-4 Christians are busy cutting their fellow brothers into pieces as they condemn them without considering Roman 3:2313 and without considering again that Christ said “judge not” that you may not be judged (Verse 5), we have the characteristics of the true Christian brother in Verse 5, he that take the plank (beam of wood) out of his eye.14 Now Christ indicates that children in the kingdom need to remove the beam of wood from their eyes so that they are able to see the mote (splinter) in the brother’s eye. This means one has to remove the problem in his eye so that he is in a position to see exisisting problems in somebody’s eye. How can somebody see if his eyes are affected with a disease? Only if the problems is solved that one is able to take up the courage to help the other. That is why Jesus said, that a blind man can not lead a fellow blind man, they will all fall in the ditch (Matthew 15:4))

With this the underlined principle according to Jesus is first take the plank out of your eyes before you help your brother15, you need to solve and clear all similar problems you have. You need to put things straight with God. You need to repent all sins before you provide a hand on somebody. When all these are done, you become qualified to live as a good brother in the Lord.

(VI). GUIDING THE HOLY FROM PROFANITY (VERSE 6).

Give not that which is sacred unto dogs neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet and turn again and rend you.

This is a very important verse in the world of Evangelism and it’s a controversial verse as far the kind of people we have to reach with the gospel is concern. Sykes says that we need to use wisdom to tell the difference between believers and non-believers and also what to share and whom to share (1981: 40).

John Ryle says that this verse (6), teaches us the importance of exercising discretion as to the persons with whom we speak on the subject of religion (1974:63). He further says that it is not everybody to whom it is wise to open our mind on spiritual matters (1974: 63). This is because everything is beautiful beautiful in its place and season and our zeal is to be tempered by a prudent consideration of times place and person (John Ryle 1974:63).

(a). From Dogs and Swine
Do not give dogs what is sacred… do not thraw your pearl before swine (pigs).
In this text understudy we have the word “do not “ appearing three times (do not judge v1); (do not give, v6) and (do not throw v 6b). These are not the new laws that Christ is putting forward but they are the directive steps and procedures that Christ is creating for effective ministry. Jesus said do not give dogs what is sacred (v 6) and do not throw your pearls to swine or pigs. Dogs and swine in Israel represented the form of evil (Charles Elliot: 40).
Allen Willoughby say that they (pig and dogs), symbolises alien and heathen men (1957:66). But John Stott categorise dogs into three; pariah dogs, vagabonds and mongrels. He says that this does not affect the kind of dogs people keep in the homes but vagabonds dogs. He also says that all pigs were unclean animals to the Jewish people (1994:179). With this Albert Barnes say that dogs meant men who opposed and abused the truth of God’s word while swine meant men of impurity of life, those who were polluted, profaned and those men who would not know the value of the gospel (1949:77). Sacred things according to Charles Elliot were holy things that had been offered for sacrifice (Lev 22:6,7, 10)(P: 40).18

Language
When we look into the language Jesus is using in this verse, skyes says that it’s not a very nice one to use for people mainly that we are images of God (1984:40). Of course John stott says that Jesus called a spade a spade as he called the following people with strong language; Herod Antipas” that Fox” Lk 13; 32: Pharisee, “whitewashed tomb” Matthew 23:27; Pharisee, “Brooks of Viper,” (Matthew 23:33). Now he calls the nonbelievers and other abusive people, “Dogs and Swine”(Matthew 7:6).

Jesus said do not give sacred food to dogs, which to a Jewish community sounded very well because Jews respected holy food and to give that holy flesh to dogs would be the greatest of all the profanation (Charles Elliot: 41). Since dogs were men who opposed and abused the truth while sacred meant holy things then this verse meant that children of the kingdom were not allowed to give the holy truth of God words to people who would abuse and oppose it. These were those who ran away from the lord. (Sykes 1984:40) and we need to give them nothings even sacred food. This them mean to say that we should not offer any truth to these violent and abusive men (Albert Barnes 1949:77). Carson says that the verse is commanding disciples not to share the riches part of spiritual truth (pearls) to vicious, irresponsible and unappreciative men (1994:117)16. With this stott concludes that if people had plenty of opportunities to hear the gospel but do not respond to it, if they stubbornly turn their back or (Cast themselves in the role of dogs and pigs, we are not to goon with them for them he says we cheapen the gospel (1995:182). But Plummer has this to say,” the gospel has no limit and it has to be preached to all but not to all in the same time or in the same way (1928:112).
Plummer ‘s stand on this issue of Verse 6 is good unlike the other scholars view who create their demarcation or boundaries of preaching the gospel for the gospel has to be preached to all people of all nations in season and out of season. While verse 6 says that we give no holy food to abusive and vicious people, we should also know that the great commission is to all mankind and there is no demarcation and limitation of whatsoever nature unless we sure that the people are rebels of the kingdom of God. But our job is to preach the Gospel to all without any compromise. Jesus came to redeem even the vicious and abusive men so that they are part of the kingdom of God. Jesus came not for those who call themselves saints but for sinners so that they repent and be born again. I like Carson’s stand as he says that the solution to this is for Christians to have a balance approach to the issue and that this study has to be done in a larger context of Jesus life17

CONCLUSION
In conclusion there are three observations made from the study of this text. Firstly, as a fallen being, man’s attitude is mainly judgemental toward other and the only solution is to declare the power of the Gospel and to make it a reality in people’s lives. Its only this power that is able to set people free from any form of bondage. Secondly, it is bad for Christians to act as spies of smaller faults in other people’s lives while they themselves are in even bigger horrible sin. Thirdly according to Matthew Poole, he says that its notorious impudence to pretend to censure and judge others for sin in which we live ourselves and he emphatically say again that Charity in every situation, needs to begin at home (1959:31). Its only if we will sort our things with God that we will be a great blessing to those around us. Christianity is not listen to the gospel only but doing the word. Also its only if our attitude shall be right and positive toward others that we shall be free from any judgemental attacks from people. Christians therefore are encouraged to be redeemed from this bondage of being judgemental.

(a).John Stott says that Jesus meant judgement in terms of censorious and he says to be censorious is to claim the competence and authority of judge. The censorious mind is the destructive mind the fault finding one (1995:176)
1 Roman 14:4, Paul says why do you judge brother?
2 I John 4:1 we are encouraged to judge and test the spirit and see whether they are from God or Satan.
3 This concept agrees with the rule of love your neighbour, as you love yourself. In the same context, Parker says that we shall give an account of every word we say and we shall be made to feel the bitterness of our own judgemental attitude on others (P.238)
Also Check Jeremiah 17:9(The heart is deceitful beyond cure and who can understand it)
4 Preachers outline call this, law of equal retribution, equal reciprocal action, equal weight, equal proportion, equal retaliation.
Joseph Parker says that Jesus was warning his disciples as regard the consequences and issues of certain condition of spirit so that no man goes forward in those matters ignorant of what the result will be (P.235)
5 Henry Matthews says that the judging of those that judge others is according to the law of retaliation (with the same measure). H further says that the righteous God in His judgement often observes a rule of proportional in the case of Adonibezek (Judges 1:7;Rev 13:10 he that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity, he that killedth with the sward must be killed with a sword; Rev 18; 6 Reward her even as she rewarded you and double into her according to her works(1996:71)
6 But the one out standing issue is the judgemental attitude that Jesus was condemning here.
7 Matthew 7:12 the golden rules conduct. But Carson says that this verse does not mean that we must not speak against sin as Christians we have the duty to rebuke sin using the word of God (1994:111)
8Matthew 7:12 Kingdom Children are not allowed to have the judgemental attitude but they are encouraged to follow the golden rule (do to others what you want others do to you)
-Matthew 5:7Kingdom children are expected to have mercy and shoe mercy because blessed are the merciful for they shall obtain mercy.
9In regard to sermon relationship, Frederick Eiselen says that we have the absolute concept of relationship and oneness in the sermon on the mountain. But the one important thing abut this is that as we exercise our judgemental mind we must know and even remember that we shall one day appear before the Holy tribunal of God (1929:967)
10 Charles Elliot defines hypocrisy as the art exercised by someone who as a teacher and reformer while he himself need to repent and need to be reformed (Clark S: 40)
-Clark says that a hypocrite is someone who professes to be what he is not (1831:99)
11. Rom 3:10;
I Cor 11:28;
II Cor 13:5.
13 I John 1:8
I John 5:19
Proverbs 20:9.
14 Frederick says that planks are conspicuous moral faults (1929:967).
15 John Stott says that we have a fatal tendency to exaggerate the faults of others and minimize the gravity or our own. He says also that our duty is not to see specks in others eyes or life while we have similar specks in our own eyes. But our duty is to take specks from our own eyes, which explains that we need to clear and sort our things in our own life before we actually go about helping others (1995:179).
18 Albert Barnes calls such sacred things flesh sacrifices .He defines pearls precious stones which he say they mean gospel

16 This is the situation where Paul encourages Titus to leave vicious men alone (Titus 3:10).
Paul abandoned the ministry because of such men and opposition (Act 18:15).
John Stott: States that the whole of Verse 6 means non-believer whole heart and nature has never been renewed while dogs and pigs were the non-believer whole heard the gospel and had opportunity to hear and receive the gospel but rejected it (1995:182).

TRINITARIANISM AND CHURCH UNITY

LET ME TELL YOU SOMETHING TODAY.
BY Peter Qeko Jere
In the gospel according to Saint John chapter 17, our Jesus Christ prays for his disciples and the church at large. What you see there that our lord prays that they may be one. Now why is it that our lord spent all that time praying for the Church national Unity? Is unity therefore important in the body of Christ? Is this an issue at all in the world today?
Looking deeper into our Lord's language you will see that this was a very serious issue such that he had to pray about it. He prayed that they may be
one. Now what Christ meant there is that the body of christ need to be united and remain one. Unity is a key therefore to any development be it in the church and even out side church. This is just the key to national and church prosperity.
If the church is united, they are able to move forward and develop without any internal squables while a sitution of internal conflicts creates a situation where you cant move forward because you end up so much busy nursing and trying to solve the situation which I feel is so unfortunate.
In Malawi today, churches are so much busy trying to solve their internal squables and can not move forward in terms of development. Finances are spent on programs to do with problems solving process. Evangelism is not done at all. You hardly hear of any crusade in the districts as it used to being when some of us were growing up. Those days were fantastic because preachers of the word could have crusades like in all the districts. These days big crusades are done in cities may be these places have more sinners than the poor districts. may be Preachers are part of the urban missionary strategy where there is this belief that the world has gone to the cities. I dont really know here because we need somebody to be holding crusades in the villages and small towns bringing people to the Lord.
Anyway this is not done because the Church is too much busy solving its internal conflict and problem. The church need to realise that Jesus want it united and remain one. United we stand and diveded we fall. If we are united, we are able to work and move forward with one voice and when we are divided, things can not work out.
Our Lord prayed for the church because He is the head and loves it so much. Jesus loves us and the church and it hates him so much when the church is not united. Unity of the church is what God desires.
You see Christ wants the Church united because the Father, Son and the Spirit are all one in Trinity. No one can separate them. They are three Trinitarian Persons but one. Its in this trinitarian power that they said, " lets make man in our own image". This is the standard that Christ want the church to follow, that they may be one and work together as a team. I will tell you more next time on Trinitarianism and Church Unity.

LESSONS FROM JOSEPH

According to the book of Genesis.

By: Peter Qeko Jere

The Old Testament is unique and very special in biblical history because it has situations where God almighty dealt with normal human beings who once lived on this planet. One such account is the history and life of Joseph in the book of Genesis, which humanity cannot afford to ignore it.

To begin with, in Chapter 37, we have an account of a young man Joseph so much loved by his father Jacob. His father demonstrated and displayed his affections and fatherly love by giving him the coat of many colours (Gen 37:3). This coat prevented him from any manual labour. While his father loved him, his eleven brothers hated and despised him (Gen 37:4). In addition to the coat of many colours his father gave him, Genesis 37:5-11 says that his brothers hated him the more because of the two dreams he had as follows;

In the first dreamt Joseph was reaping in the field and his eleven brothers sheaves gathered around and bowed down to his sheaf. In the second dream, he saw the sun, the moon and the eleven stars bowed down to him. Now because of these dreams, the hatred grew to the point of death. His brothers were much more dangerous together than they were alone. As he was coming to see them near Dothan one day they plotted to kill him and they said, “ Here comes the dreamer…come now lets kill him and throw him into one of these cisterns and say that a ferocious animal devoured him then we will see what comes of his dreams (Gen 37:19)”. After further consultations amongst themselves, they however resolved to sell him to the Ishmaelites who were passing by on their way to Egypt. The business transaction was done and Joseph was sold at the price of twenty shekels of silver to the Ishmaelites who took him to Egypt where they in turn sold him again to Potiphar who was the captain of Pharaoh’s guard.

This time Joseph was separated from his father and all kinsmen and the bible says that God extended his favour upon him as he blessed every place and everything he did. Because of him, God blessed Potiphar’s house. His presence in the house gave birth to prosperity. He was not only a blessing in Potiphar’s house but also in prison. He was later jailed because of Potiphar’s wife immoral schemes (Gen 39:11-19). While in prison the Lord granted him favour and kindness and was made in charge of all prisoners. It was in this prison that Joseph interpreted the Baker and the Cupbearer’s dreams. As if this was not enough, Pharaoh had a very complicated dream that baffled the mind of men. There was no-one able to interpret this dream on the entire planet. However Joseph was available and managed to interpret this huge dream. He told Pharaoh that the dream meant that there was to be seven years of plenty food and seven years of terrible famine in the entire land of Egypt. Because of the writing on the wall that Pharaoh saw from Joseph interpretation of his dream, he decided to offer him the job and he said, “ I hereby put you (Joseph) in charge of the whole land of Egypt (Gen 41:41). Thus pharaoh made Joseph Prime Minster and Minister of Agriculture and Food Security. He was the first non-Egyptian to hold such a high political office in Egypt. As minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Joseph stored up huge quantities of grains like the sand of the sea during the first seven years of plenty. It was so much that he stopped keeping records because it was beyond measure (Gen 41:49).

After the seven years of plenty, there came the seven years of terrible famine that affected the middle east and the whole world respectively. During this time, the whole world, rushed to Egypt to buy grain for their survivor. Joseph, the Egyptian Prime Minster (second in command to Pharaoh), was the only hope and existing life-line for the entire human kind. This famine didn’t spare the Jacob’s family in Canaan. He ordered his children to go down to Egypt to buy some grain for their survivor. Jacob and his children had no idea that Joseph whom they sold twenty-two years ago was the one now in charge of this food security in Egypt. This was Joseph whom if anything, his brothers hated, despised and wished him dead. This was Joseph whom God blessed that he was now the Prime Minster and Minster of Agriculture and Food Security in Egypt something which his brothers never thought of during that consultation before they sold him to the Ishmaelites.

When his brothers arrived in Egypt, Joseph recognized them and became their savour. He provided food for them and never revenged their brutality done on him. During this time, Joseph’s two dreams came to pass because all of them bowed down to him when they arrived in Egypt. They had no option this time because they were meeting the highest man of authority in Egypt though they had no idea that this man was their very brother whom they sold twenty-two years ago when he was seventeen years old. Therefore we need to note the following:

Firstly is that Joseph’s action, welcoming his brothers and providing food for them, shows a huge amount of forgiveness. I do not know how we could have handled this situation if we were in Joseph’s shoes. Majority of us could take drastic measures making sure that they heavily pay for all the pain caused on us. However it is amazing to note that Joseph forgave them and became their very life- line. Joseph’s action is the very a model which we need to emulate. We simply need to forgive no matter what and we have no rights whatever not to forgive. Joseph’s action coincides with the New Testament situation where our Lord Jesus Christ on the cross forgave us once and for all” (Luke 23: 34)

Secondly is that we need to demonstrate mercy and kindness to all people because we do not know what the Lord has in stored for them in future. We also do not know what shall become of us in years to come. At the same time we do not know what shall become of us in years to come. Those we despise, hate, have already destroyed or want to destroy and pull down shall be the same people whom the Lord shall bless some day. This physically happened in the life of Joseph who was sold and hated by his brothers who had no idea what was to become of him in years later.

Finally is that the destiny of God’s children (though in poverty or despised) is in God’s hands. Him alone knows what He has in stored for them and what kind of destiny they shall have. Therefore we should not segregate, hate, despise, destroy or even kill because it is possible that their situations shall change some day and we shall be at their mercy. At the same time the Joseph account should teach us to be extra careful on how we handle and treat various people because if not careful, we shall one day regret and blame ourself when the same pain we inflicted on others shall backfire on us.

THE GOD WHO INTERVENES

Why cant you try Him today

BY: Peter Qeko Jere

The Old Testament books of Exodus and Daniel have some of most interesting real stories with great lessons for Malawians today. These are stories that happened in the lives of real people who lived on this planet. The one unique character revealed in these books is that God almighty will do and use everything and anything at His disposal as God to intervene in the lives of His dear children.

To begin with, in the Old Testament book of Exodus we have two accounts that show how caring God is that he physically came down and intervene in the lives of His children in Egypt. In chapter 3:7-8, we see the children of God in Egypt where for 400 years they lived under the oppressive regime of Pharaoh. This was a situation where they lived and stayed as slaves, which mean that they had no rights whatsoever, and they followed every little instruction ordered by their Egyptian autocratic masters. However the bible says that time came when the oppression was too much for them and they cried and remembered the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. In response to their cry, God remembered His dear children in Exodus 3:7-8 He said the following, “ I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers and I am concerned about their suffering. So I have come down to rescue them from the hand of the Egyptian and to bring them up out of that land into a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey”.

Therefore, the four things that we need to know about God is that He firstly, sees every little thing done on the lives of His children (Saved). Secondly He hears His children when they are crying and He gets concern about their situation. Finally, He comes down to physically rescue them from whatever situation they be in. Now we need to know that whenever God comes down, the whole of heaven comes down with Him and this is no big joke. The later chapter of Exodus shows how God punished Pharaoh and the whole of Egypt just because He cares a lot about His children. He came down to intervene and He used every available means to rescue them. Thus there is a huge advantage of being a child of God saved by Christ precious blood because in difficult and painful times, you are more assured that there is God in heaven who can fights and intervenes for you.

As if this was no enough Exodus 14:13-22 gives us an account of what God did when His children came at the edge of the water of the Red Sea. After their victorious liberation and deliverance from Pharaoh, they later had the Red Sea to cross. When they came at the very edge of the Sea, God had no problem in reorganizing the Red Sea waters by ordering it to stop flowing for a while so that His children should cross peacefully. Upon the word of God something extraordinary happened, the kind of thing and event that baffled the mind all men. The water did not only stop but the bottom of it became dry and beautiful carpeted. In fact this was a VIP carpet from above. So they walked on a God made carpet with a wall of water to the right and left till they reach the other side of the sea. While God’s children walked safely to the other side, the Egyptians horses, chariot and horsemen were all swept into the sea when Moses commanded the water to go back to its original place. This is what God is able to do to protect His children. Those who give headache, pain and heart attacks to God’s children better read this writing on the wall. This is because no-one tortures oppress and cause pain in the lives of God’s children and go away with it unpunished. The principle is this: God will always fight for His children and we better be careful the way we treat and handle those we live, stay and work with so that we avoid facing the heavy penalty from the almighty.

In addition to the Exodus account, God is seen intervening mightily in the lives of His four Hebrew children in Babylon, Daniel, Shadreck, Mesheck and Abednego. In Daniel 3: 16-18, King Nebuchadnezzer ordered that the whole world should worship the golden image that he made. Anyone refusing to follow this order had to be thrown in the burning furnace so that they be burned and killed alive. But the three Jewish young men, Shadreck, Mesheck and Abednego were so courageous that they told Nebuchadnezzer and said, “we don not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to save us from it and he will rescue us from your hand. But if he does not we want you to know that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up”. What a bold and courageous statement of faith! God did rescue them and were not harmed by the fire. This means that God is able to rescue His children from whatever kind of fire and situations prepared by agents of darkness.

As if this was not enough Daniel 6: 1-28, we have an account of Daniel who was thrown in the den of lions by King Darius who later took over the kingdom from Nebechadnezzer and Belteshazzer. King Darius ordered that for 30 days people in his kingdom should pray and worship him. This was against the Jewish tradition of praying to Yahweh the God of heaven and earth. Daniel refused to obey this order and was thrown in the den of lion. However God intervened and did the following according to Daniel himself, “ My God sent his angel and he shut the mouths of the lions and they have not hurt me because I was found innocent in his sight”. The angel of the Lord shut the mouth of the lions and they could not hurt Daniel. The God of heaven will do everything possible to protect his children.

The God who came down and destroyed the whole of Egypt, commanded the Red Sea waters from flowing, made Nebuchadnezzer’s burning furnace useless and finally shut the mouth of lions in the den of lions, is the same today, tomorrow and forever. He is still able to do abundantly in our lives and He will open up a way where there is no way. This God, Jehovah Elohe Abothekem (God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob), will shut the mouths of the many lions around us and even making useless the many Nebuchadnezzer’s burning furnace prepared for our destruction.
